Scope and Contents

The archive comprises correspondence, including Grigson's correspondence with publishers of his work; drafts and final versions of poems and prose; papers relating to publications, including drafts; notebooks and sketchbooks; research files relating to writers, painters and exhibitions; and papers of and relating to Grigson and his writing, including records of his travels, biographical materials, photographs and scrapbooks.

Abstract

Biographical / Historical

Geoffrey Grigson (1905-1985) graduated from St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, with a degree in English in 1927. He began work at the London office of the The Yorkshire Post and later became literary editor of The Morning Post.

Grigson began to publish his own poetry in the 1930s. In 1933, he founded the poetry magazine, New Verse. He developed a career as a writer and critic, with regular book reviews and articles, the publication of volumes of his own poetry, anthologies, books on art and artists, and guides to nature and the countryside.
