Biographical / Historical

Justin Broackes gained his doctorate from the University of Oxford, where he began his teaching career at University and Oriel colleges. He also carried out research as a Fellow of All Souls College and was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Cognitive Studies at the Ecole normale supérieure and at the Institut Jean Nicod in Paris. More recently, he has been teaching at Brown University, Rhode Island, United States.

His main research interests include metaphysics and epistemology, the history of 17th- and 18th-century philosophy, some topics in ancient philosophy, and the philosophy of mind. His current work focuses on the theory of perception from the ancient Greeks to Wittgenstein; on colour and colour-blindness; and on the notion of substance in early modern philosophy.

Previously in the possession of David Wiggins, author of Sameness and substance (1980), mentioned in a letter that came with the draft.
