Typewritten notes by Horace Romano (Rom) Harré taken at a series of lectures given by J.L. Austin at the University of Oxford between 1952 and 1954 under the title 'Words and deeds'. Harré returned to Oxford from his teaching post at the University of Punjab in 1954 to study philosophy under J.L. Austin. The notes are from that year.

Biographical / Historical

Horace Romano 'Rom' Harré (1927-2019) was a philosopher and psychologist. His areas of expertise include philosophy of science and social psychology. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Scholarly Community Encyclopedia.

John Langshaw Austin (1911-1960) was a philosopher often thought of as a paradigmatic 'linguistic philosopher'. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
