'Reference and existence: the John Locke lectures for 1973 by Saul A. Kripke'
Typescript of Saul A. Kripke's prestigious John Lock lectures delivered at the University of Oxford in 1973 under the overarching title 'Reference and Existence'. The typescript was prepared by Henry Hardy in December 1974 from 'lightly edited tape-recordings'. In his editorial note, Hardy also states that 'this version of "Reference and Existence" is not intended to be in final publishable form'.

Biographical / Historical
Saul Kripke (1940-2022) was an American philosopher. In 1962, he gained a B.S. in Mathematics from Harvard University, where he remained a lecturer until 1968. Kripke taught logic and philosophy at Rockefeller University from 1968 to 1976 and at Princeton University from 1976 until his retirement in 1998. In 2001 he was awarded the Rolf Schock Prize in logic and philosophy by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Kripke made a significant contribution to several fields related to mathematical and modal logic, philosophy of language and mathematics, metaphysics, epistemology, and recursion theory. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
