Abstract
Collection of unpublished articles by Oswald Hanfling, 2008.
Biographical / Historical
Oswald Hanfling (1927-2005) was an Ordinary Language Philosopher. Following his arrival in England with Kindertransport in April 1939, he lived in Bradford with a foster family. He married Helga Weissrock, a fellow German refugee and an art teacher, in 1954. Before devoting his life to teaching, he worked for 25 years in business. He was appointed lecturer, then reader, and finally professor at the Open University, where he developed highly acclaimed philosophy courses. His academic career spanned from 1970 to 1993. The primary influence on his philosophical thinking was Wittgenstein, whose ideas he discussed in, among other publications, Wittgenstein's Later Philosophy (1989) and Wittgenstein and the Human Form of Life (2002). Hanfling also authored The Search for Meaning (1987) and Philosophy and Ordinary Language: the Bent and Genius of Our Tongue (2000). He died on 25 October 2005.
