Abstract

Archive of David Bostock, [1974-1979], 1989-2007, n.d.

Biographical / Historical

David Bostock (1936-2019) was a philosopher. Having read Literae Humaniores at St John's College, Oxford, under Paul Grice, Bostock held stipendiary posts at Leicester University (1963-1964), the Australian National University at Canberra (1964-1967), and Harvard University (1967-1968). He was elected Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Merton College, Oxford in 1968 and remained in this post until his retirement in 2004.

Bostock pursued two distinct disciplines of philosophy, ancient philosophy and philosophy of mathematics. It was the latter that was the subject of his magnum opus Logic and Arithmetic, vol. 1 (1974) and vol. 2 (1979).

Further details of his life and work can be found in a form of an appreciation on the website of Merton College, Oxford.
