Abstract
Archive of Gilbert Ryle, 1903-1989, n.d.
Biographical / Historical
Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was a philosopher with a wide range of subject interests, including the philosophy of language, the theory of meaning, phenomenology, thinking, and the nature of philosophy itself. He contributed significantly to the University of Oxford establishing itself as an important centre of philosophy in the Western world. It is thanks mainly to him that, by a statute of 1946, the new postgraduate degree of Bachelor of Philosophy was first examined in 1948. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
