Abstract

Biographical / Historical
Charles Henry Roberts (1865-1959) was educated at Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford. He taught at Exeter College, Oxford, from 1889 to 1894 and then sought a political career as a Liberal. He was elected to Parliament in 1906 for the City of Lincoln and held the seat until 1918. He was chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee Inquiry into the Putumayo atrocities and served as Under-Secretary of State for India, 1914-1915. He returned to the House of Commons as MP for Derby from 1922 to 1923.
Roberts served as Justice of the Peace from 1900 to 1950, was chairman of Cumberland County Council, 1938-1958, and chairman of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society, ?1915-1930s.
