Letters to Charles H. Roberts concerning the work of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society comprising:

  1. Letters primarily from Travers Buxton Secretary of the Society, and John Harris, Organising Secretary of the Society, relating to the Putumayo Committee, the Slavery Bill going through Parliament, Lushai Hills slavery and Indians in British Columbia, Feb 1914-May 1915.
  2. Letters from Travers Buxton and John Harris relating to the Rhodesian question, Nigeria, the name of the Society and the Paris Peace Treaty with annotated memoranda and a letter to the press about the former German colonies, May-Sep 1919.
  3. Letters from Travers Buxton and John Harris relating to the British North Borneo Company, Canada, Rhodesia and the work of the League of Nations in Geneva, Jul-Sep 1922.
  4. Letters to Roberts in response to notice of the Anti-Slavery Society's annual meeting and centenary campaign, Apr 1932, with report on the Aborigines Conference held in Sydney and a deputation to the Prime Minister by the Aborigines Progressive Association in Sydney, Jan 1938.

Abstract

Letters sent to Charles H. Roberts MP by the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society with related papers, 1914-1938.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Henry Roberts (1865-1959) was educated at Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford. He taught at Exeter College, Oxford, from 1889 to 1894 and then sought a political career as a Liberal. He was elected to Parliament in 1906 for the City of Lincoln and held the seat until 1918. He was chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee Inquiry into the Putumayo atrocities and served as Under-Secretary of State for India, 1914-1915. He returned to the House of Commons as MP for Derby from 1922 to 1923.

Roberts served as Justice of the Peace from 1900 to 1950, was chairman of Cumberland County Council, 1938-1958, and chairman of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society, ?1915-1930s.
