Working papers of Gabriel Turville-Petre (1908-1978), Professor of Ancient Icelandic Literature and Vigfússon Reader at Oxford University.

Biographical / Historical

(Edward Oswald) Gabriel Turville-Petre (1908-1978) was a scholar of Ancient Icelandic Literature and Old Norse Literature. He was the Vigfússon Reader in Icelandic Literature (1941-1953) and later Professor of Ancient Icelandic Literature and Antiquities (1953-1975) at the University of Oxford. He also held the position of Lecturer at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik (1936-1938), was awarded Grand Knight's Cross of the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland in 1963. Arrangement

The collection was arranged by material type into lectures; lecture notes and articles; translations of sagas and associated papers; and reviews.

Custodial History

The papers were previously in the custody of Professor Heather O'Donoghue of the English Faculty, University of Oxford and were transferred from the English Faculty Library to the Bodleian Library in 2022. A further box was transferred in 2024.
