Abstract

Letters from A.E. Coppard to Edna Franklyn, 1954-1956.

Biographical / Historical

Alfred Edgar Coppard (1878-1957) was an English short-story writer and poet. For more details see Dictionary of National Biography.

Edna Alice Lomas (1903-1999) was born in Rusholme, Manchester, on 16 March 1903, the daughter of Arthur Franklyn and Louisa Ann Lomas. Arthur Franklyn died in Genoa in 1909 and her mother married Peter Oscar Serck in 1912 (they divorced sometime during the First World War; Peter remarried in 1919 and died in 1924; Louisa died in 1929). It appears likely that Edna and her brother Arthur Franklyn were brought up by relatives, most likely by their maiden aunt Sarah Ellen Franklyn.

On 14 April 1921, aged 18, Edna married her first cousin, Alan George Franklyn in Rawdon and they first lived as boarders in Ilkley. Their first child, Alan, was born prematurely on 15 March 1922 and died shortly afterwards. Their second child, Kenneth George, was born on 22 December 1923 and the family sometime after this moved to Horsforth. Unbeknownst to them, Kenneth had a rare heart condition and he died on a family holiday in Warwickshire in August 1937, aged 13, probably from the after effects of the sudden emersion in cold water when they went swimming in the River Avon.

In 1946, Edna and Alan moved to Leeds where Alan had a shop (Pegasus Radios). Edna, who was by trade a dressmaker, became a member of the Leeds Writers Circle and was their president for 1953. She is known for writing stories for children including two broadcast by the BBC ('The Red Scarf', which was broadcast on 6 October 1953 by the BBC Home Service and 'Bunny Bobtail's Magic Letter' broadcast on 29 November 1955). After some years running a boarding house, the couple retired to Far Hill Top Farm in Clint (near Ripley) in 1970. A decade or so later, they moved into Harrogate itself where Alan died on 17 October 1987. Edna died on 11 November 1999 aged 96: her ashes were buried alongside Alan's in Kenneth's grave in the churchyard of St John's in Adel, Leeds.
