Biographical / Historical

Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer, CMG (1864) KCMG (1874) GCMG (1883), was born on the 11 December 1836. He was educated at Charterhouse, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Sir Bulwer was Official Resident in the Ionian Islands under the Lord High Commissioner (1860-1864); Private Secretary to his uncle, the Ambassador at Constantinople (1865), and Receiver-General of Trinidad (1866). He administered the Government of Dominica (1867-1869) and was Governor of Labuan and Consular-General in Borneo (1871-1875); Lieutenant-Governor of Natal (1875-1880); Governor of Natal and Special Commissioner for Zulu Affairs (1882-1885) and High Commissioner in Cyprus (1886-1892). Sir Bulwer died on the 30 September 1914.
