Biographical / Historical
Herbert David Ziman (1902-1983) was educated at Rugby School and University College, Oxford. He started his professional career as leader-writer, assistant literary editor and film citic at the Liverpool Daily Post (1925-1929) and as museum, library and archaeological correspondent at The Times (1930-1933). For the next 35 years Ziman was on the staff of the Daily Telegraph as leader-writer (1934-1939 and 1946-1955), war correspondent (1944-1945), and literary editor and special correspondent for the world (1956-1968). He also played a leading role in the establishment of the Friends of the National Libraries, serving as its first Honorary Secretary from 1931 to 1937, and as member of its Executive Committee from 1937 to 1982. In 1979 Ziman was awarded Officier, Ordre de Léopold II (Belgium). Further details of his life and work can be found in the Who's Who.
