Abstract
Papers of Sir Rex Hunt (1926-2012), diplomat.
Biographical / Historical
Rex Masterman Hunt was born in 1926 and educated at Sir William Turner School in Coatham and St Peter's College, Oxford. He served in the RAF from 1944 to 1948 and in 1951 joined the Colonial Service and was posted to Uganda. He moved to the Commonwealth Relations Office in 1963 (which merged with the Foreign Office in 1968) and served in Borneo, Ankara, Jakarta, Saigon and Kuala Lumpur.
In 1980 Hunt was posted to the Falkland Islands as governor and high commissioner of the British Antarctic Territory. He was expelled at the time of the Argentine occupation in April 1982, returning as civil commissioner in June 1982 and remaining until he retired in 1985. He continued to be involved in Falkland Islands associations and revisited on several occasions. He published his memoir, My Falkland Days, in 1992 and died in 2012.
