Biographical / Historical
Enid Mary Starkie (1897–1970) was an Irish literary critic, known for her biographical works on French poets. She was a Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Dame Janet Vaughan (1899-1993), haematologist and radiobiologist, was Principal of Somerville College from 1945 to 1967. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
André Frédéric Cournand (1895-1988) was a French-American physician and physiologist, awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1956. His daughter Marie-Claire was taught by Enid Starkie at Somerville College, Oxford.
