Biographical / Historical

Otto Meyerhof (1884-1951) was a German biochemist who won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1923. He left Germany in 1938, eventually settling in the USA where he became a citizen in 1946. For further information see the American National Biography.

Hugh Blaschko (1900-1993) was a German biochemist and pharmacologist who worked with Otto Meyerhof in Berlin and Heidelberg from 1925 to 1932. He left Germany for the UK in 1933 and worked at the University of Oxford from 1944. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Custodial History

The letter and other folios were tipped into a book from the library of Hugh Blaschko which had been donated to the History of Medicine Library: Metabolism and Function. A collection of papers dedicated to Otto Meyerhof on the occasion of his 65th birthday edited by D. Nachmansohn (1950), shelfmark QP171.M38 MET 1950.
