Comprises:

  1. Item 1: 'Extracts from Letters on a special mission through China, Japan, Corea and Formosa 1896-97'. Notebook in diary form with extracts from letters describing journey from leaving Canton on 28 December 1895 until writing from Osaka, Japan, on 22 February 1897. The notebook contains a map and some postcards sent to family and friends.
  2. Item 2: 'Volume II'. Notebook continuing the journey from Osaka on 22 February 1897, to Nagasaki, Seoul, Formosa [Taiwan] until Brenan resumes his role as Consul in Canton in June 1897. Includes drawings of a map, canoes and a thatched house.
  3. Item 3: Visitor book for Brenan's stern wheeler, the 'Shamrock', launched on 19 May 1894, containing notes on outings and signatures of passengers until 7 July 1898. Includes two photographs of 'Shamrock'.

Abstract

Biographical / Historical

Byron Brenan (1847-1927) was a British diplomat who served in China from 1866, initially as an interpreter and then as Acting Chinese Sectretary from 1878 to 1880. He held consular positions in Wuhu, Tientsin, Chefoo and Canton and was British Representative on the Opium Mixed Commission at Hong Kong, 1886. He visited the principal treaty ports of China, Japan and Corea to report on trade in 1895 and was British Consul-General in Shanghai, 1898-1901, before retiring.
