Abstract

Transcripts by Dr Lisa Barber of letters written c.1884-1962 to or concerning Lady Margaret Primrose, later Marchioness of Crewe.

Biographical / Historical

Margaret Crewe-Milnes, Marchioness of Crewe, (1881-1967), known as Peggy, was the daughter of the fifth earl of Rosebery who was Prime Minister, 1894-1895. On her marriage to her father's colleague, Robert Milnes-Crewe, Marquess of Crewe, she became a political hostess. During World War I she chaired the Central Committee on Women's Employment and was one of the first women to be appointed as a justice of the peace in 1920. Existence and Location of Originals

The original letters belonged to the Marchioness's daughter, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, (1915-2014) and were consulted at her home, West Horsley Place, Surrey, by Dr Lisa Barber.
