Drawings by Esther Cullen of Niko Tinbergen from childhood to retirement, illustrating the development of his interest in animal behaviour and important points in his life and career. The drawings are in pen and colour pencil on a paper scroll. The scroll was presented to Tinbergen when he retired from the University of Oxford in 1974.

Biographical / Historical

Nikolaas (Niko) Tinbergen (1907-1988) was an authority on animal behaviour who pioneered the modern discipline of ethology, working at the University of Oxford from 1949 to 1974. For further details see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Esther Cullen was an animal behaviourist who worked at the University of Oxford with Tinbergen from the 1950s.

Donated to the Bodleian Library by Andrew Loman, grandson of Niko Tinbergen, in 2022.
