Biographical / Historical
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist and university professor. Details are given in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
John Christopher Bretherton (1925-2015) studied English at Lincoln College, Oxford, October 1942-June 1943 and January 1947-June 1949 and was taught by Professor Tolkien. He published a couple of books for children.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated to the Bodleian Library in 2025 by the six surviving children of Christopher Bretherton: Lucy Williams, Miranda Ricks, Clarissa Kloska, Jacqueline Seymour, Kate Willis and Bridget Randall.
