Abstract

Archive of Candida Lycett Green (1942-2014), author and conservationist

Biographical / Historical

Candida Rose Betjeman (1942-2014) was the daughter of John Betjeman, poet and conservationist, and his wife, Penelope, a travel writer. After leaving school, she travelled in Europe and studied sculpture at Oxford Polytechnic. While in Oxford she formed friendships with Richard Ingrams, Willie Rushton and others. On moving to London and taking up secretarial work, she became involved with Ingrams and Rushton in the production of Private Eye.

In 1963, Candida married Rupert Lycett Green, a fashion designer. She began a career as a freelance journalist and author. Two of her earliest books, The Adventure of Hadrian Hedgehog (Collins, 1968) and Hadrian in the Orient (Collins, 1969) were written for children. She contributed to Vogue, Private Eye, the Evening Standard and later to Country Life and The Oldie, founded by Ingrams. A number of her books celebrate Victorian buildings, gardens and rural England. They include Goodbye London (HarperCollins, 1973), written with Christopher Booker, The Front Garden (1974), England: Travels Through an Unwrecked Landscape (Pavilion, 1996) and, in collaboration with H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (later King Charles III), The Garden at Highgrove (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2000).

In 1994 and 1995 Lycett Green published two volumes of John Betjeman's letters. Further publications based on her father's life and work include Coming Home: An anthology of prose (Methuen, 1997) and Betjeman's Britain (Folio Society, 1999). In 2006 she led the celebration of the centenary of her father's birth, coordinating numerous events in London and Cornwall.
