Abstract

Correspondence and papers of Graham Carleton Greene (1936-2016) publisher and his mother, Helga Greene (née Guinness) (1916-1985) literary agent.

Biographical / Historical

Graham Carleton Greene, CBE (1926-2016), publisher, born to Sir Hugh Carleton Greene, KCMG, OBE and Helga Mary Connolly (née Guinness) held the position of Managing Director of Jonathan Cape, 1966-1988. He was appointed Chairman of a number of organisations and cultural institutions including Jackdaw Publications Ltd, 1968-1988, Statesman and Nation Publishing Company, 1981-1985, GB-China Centre, 1986-1997 and the British Museum, 1996-2002. He was a President of the Publishers Association, 1977-1979 and a Governer for Compton Verney House Trust, 1995-2011. He married his first wife Judith Margaret Gordon-Walker in 1957 (dissolved 1976) and second wife Sally Georgina Horton in 1976 (dissolved 1984), the couple had one son. He was awarded a CBE in 1986.

Helga Mary Connolly (née Guinness, other married name Greene) (1916-1985), literary agent, born to Henry Samuel Howard Guinness and Alfhild Holter. She opened The Helga Greene Literary Agency in 1952, operating firstly from Guinness-Mahon, Rathbone Place and finally Eaton Mews West in the house adjoining her own home. Her agency represented authors including American crime writer Raymond Chandler, Austrian artist and poet Oskar Kokoschka and zoologist Lancelot Hogben. She married her first husband Sir Hugh Carleton Greene in 1934 (divorced 1948), the couple had two sons, Graham and James Greene. She was engaged to Raymond Chandler upon his death in 1959. She married her second husband Harry Stuart Connolly in 1963.

Graham C. Greene's original order has been retained as far as possible.
