Abstract

Papers of the Bow Group

Biographical / Historical

The Bow Group is a think tank, with the aim of promoting conservative opinion. It was founded in 1951 as a Conservative counter to the Fabian Society, and takes its name from the Group's first meeting place in the East End of London. The Bow Group can generally be categorised as supporting both a market economy and social responsibility, and was associated with the development of post-Keynesian economics in the 1970s and 1980s. It was later in the vanguard of developing policy on privatisation and new enterprise zones. Several members of the Bow Group have gone on to hold high political office, with former Chairmen of the group including such people as Geoffrey Howe, Leon Brittan, Norman Lamont and Michael Howard.

The Bow Group's work consists primarily of research and publication. Political pamphlets and papers are published, and the group's journal Crossbow comes out quarterly. The Bow Group also regularly organises debates, conferences and other events.

Custodial History

The archive of the Conservative Party was established as a source for academic study at the Bodleian Library in 1978 by an agreement made between the University of Oxford and the Conservative Party, and brought together surviving historic papers of the Party previously held in various locations including Newcastle University Library and the former Conservative Central Office in Smith Square, London. Since 1996, ownership of the archive has been vested in the Conservative Party Archive Trust. The archive includes records from all three areas of Party organisation: parliamentary, voluntary and professional.
