Abstract
Letters from Lord Dunsany, Walter de la Mare and Richard de la Mare to Henry Woodgate.
Biographical / Historical
Edward Plunkett, eighteenth Baron Dunsany, (1878-1957) was a writer of short stories, plays, novels and verse. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was an author and poet. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Richard de la Mare (1901-1986) was the eldest son of Walter de la Mare and was chairman of Faber and Faber.
Henry Gordon Woodgate (1884-1957) studied Science and Classics, and then History, at Merton College, Oxford, from 1902 to 1907. He was history master at Whitgift School in Croydon from 1913 to 1947 and probably met Walter de la Mare there as Walter's son Richard attended the school from 1910 to 1920. An amateur scholar, Woodgate entered into extensive correspondence on literary and philosophical topics with various writers and academics.
