Photograph album of Rev. George Edward Hubbard
Photograph album compiled by the Rev. George Hubbard FRIBA (1897-1977) recording church building projects in South India and the Art Industrial School, Nazareth, Tinnevelly, 1938-1944, with captions. The album contains five loose photographs of the Margaret Eddy Memorial Chapel, designed by Hubbard, at the Kodaikanal International School, Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, with explanatory information compiled by his son, Nick Hubbard, in 2022.

Abstract

Biographical / Historical
George Edward Hubbard was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1897. After active service during World War I he studied architecture in London and the USA and then worked as an architect in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Lahore. After serving as a lay misionary in West Africa Hubbard studied for the priesthood in London, was ordained in 1936 and served as an assistant curate in Gloucester.
From 1938 to 1944 Hubbard served with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) as principal of the Art Industrial School in Nazareth, Tinnevelly, South India and was also Diocesan Architect. After returning from India he worked in a number of parishes in England until retiring in 1966. He died in 1977 in Northampton.
