Abstract
Jeremy Daniel collection, largely comprising postcards by Henry Taunt, c1900-1957, 2000-2020.
Biographical / Historical
Henry William Taunt (1842–1922) was a professional photographer, author, publisher, antiquary and entertainer active in Oxford, England. One of the attractions at his annual children's entertaitments were magic lantern shows. Following the publication of his A New Map of the River Thames (1872), he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He wrote over 50 local histories and guidebooks. His photographs of Oxford (both town and gown) as well as neighbouring counties formed the basis of a vast number of picture postcards he published himself. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Jeremy Daniel (d 2022) was a stamp and vintage postcard collector. In 1976 he established a shop in 98 Cowley Road, Oxford calling it The Oxford (and later Jeremy's) Stamp Centre. There he also sold a wide range of postcards. He bequeathed his collection to the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
