Biographical / Historical
Eric Raymond Bevington (1914-2004), CMG (1961), was educated at Monkton Combe School, Loughborough College, and Queen's College, Cambridge, taking a post as a cadet in HM Overseas Service, Gilbert and Ellice Islands, 1937. He began work as a district officer, Fiji, 1942, served as Secretary, Commission of Enquiry into Cost of Living Allowances, Nigeria, 1945-1946, and was made administrative officer Cl.I, Fiji, 1950. He became Assistant Colonial Secretary (Development), Fiji, 1951, Development Commissioner, Brunei, 1954, and worked as Financial Secretary, Fiji, 1958-1961. He was Development Commissioner, Fiji, 1962-1963 and a member of Fiji's Executive Council, 1958-1963. He was Senior Project Engineer, Wrigh Rain Ltd., 1964-1967, Appeals Inspector, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, 1967-1970, Senior Housing and Planning Inspector, Department of the Environment, 1970-1978, and a member of New Forest District Council, 1979-1983. In 1939 he married Enid Mary Selina (nee Homer), with whom he had one son and one daughter.
