Biographical / Historical
James Learmonth Gowans (1924-2020) was a pioneering immunologist, a research professor at the University of Oxford, the director of the Medical Research Council and later the secretary-general of the Human Frontier Science Program, Strasbourg. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1963 and knighted in 1982.
