Drawing of 'The Residence of Lord Jersey' in Middleton Stoney, Oxfordshire
Mounted pencil drawing of 'The Residence of Lord Jersey' in Middleton Stoney, Oxfordshire by E. Williams. It seems to be a sketch for the engraving included in Oxfordshire: the history and antiquities of the hundreds of Bullington and Ploughley by John Dunkin (London: Harding, Mavor, and Lepard, 1823), with a note 'Pub[lishe]d by J. Dunkin, Bookseller, Bromley, Kent, Nov 1, 1822'. The engraving differs in detail: birds in the sky, smoke coming from the chimneys and several figures in the foregournd have been added to it. Although it was Edward Williams (c. 1755-1797?) who is known as the engraver, the figures' attire points to the 19th century, so it was probably his son, Edward William (1781-1855), the landscape painter, who is responsible for the sketch. The depicted residence is most likely to be the mansion rebuilt by the 5th Earl of Jersey, George Child Villiers, 5GCH, PC (1773-1859).
