Letter of Duke of Reichstadt to unknown recipient, with its transcription into roman script and translation into English
Letter written by Duke of Reichstadt, son of Napoleon Bonaparte I, reporting on the occasion he was told by Francis I, Emperor of Austria, that he was just appointed a cadet in the Kaiser-Jäger-Regiment, 10 Aug 1828. Also present are: transcription of the letter from the original gothic into roman script provided by Hannah Mahnert and translation of the letter into English provided by June Knowles. The recipient of the letter is unknown, but believed to be, according to the donor, a member of the Schnorr von Carolsfeldt family of artists.

Biographical / Historical
Napoleon-François-Charles-Joseph Bonaparte, Duke von Reichstadt, also called King of Rome or Napoleon II (1811-1832) was the only son of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie-Louise. Further biographical details can be found in the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
