A small group of letters in photocopy addressed to N.W. McClellan expressing gratitude for his services to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, mainly in Africa. The signatories include: A. Paul, Governor of Kassala Province, Sudan, [1954]; Ismail El Ashari, Prime Minister of Sudan, 1954; Christopher Soames, Interim Governor of Southern Rhodesia, 1980; Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister, 1980; and Richard Luce, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, 1980. Other photocopies show a membership card of the Northern Rhodesia European Civil Servants' Medical Aid Fund, 1954; circular memorandum for the Governor's Tour in Lusaka, 1955; newspaper cutting with a picture of McClellan, then Mufulira District Commissioner, presenting Elizabeth Crust with an MBE medal, 1961; and The Queen's Permission to wear the Zimbabwe Independence Medal, 1980. Also present is a note explaining the circumstances of McClellan's intervention regarding cafés in Lusaka in the early days of the African National Congress, 1998.

Biographical / Historical

Nigel W[illiam?] McClellan (b. Aug 1916?) was a civil servant working for the British Foreign Office, mainly in Africa. In the 1950s McClellan worked for the Political Service in Sudan, later as District Commissioner (Urban) in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia; and as Mufulira District Commissioner in Zambia. In 1980 McClellan was a member of the Election Commission that helped Zimbabwe gain its independence. For his contribution to this effort McClellan was awarded the Zimbabwe Independence Medal conferred on him by the Government of Zimbabwe.
