Abstract

Letter from Sir John Stainer to Victor de Pontigny, 16 Dec [1882].

Biographical / Historical

Sir John Stainer (1840-1901) was a composer, organist and musicologist. See Oxford Music Online for further details.

Victor de Pontigny was born on 27 November 1804. He became a musician and contributor to the first edition of A Dictionary of Music and Musicians edited by Sir George Grove. Described in his obituary in The Musical Times (vol. 33, 1892) as 'the greatest authority of his day on percussive instruments', de Pontigny wrote many entries for percussion instruments, including world percussion instruments. He also covered English historic organ builders and other subjects. He was a member of the newly established Royal Musical Association and it is this Society for whom he presented a lecture 'On kettledrums' drawing from his own instrument-making experiences. He died on 21 January 1892.
