Biographical / Historical

Sir James August Henry Murray (1837–1915) was a philologist and lexicographer, who became the primary editor of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in 1879. Further details of his life and work can be found in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Effie Laura Browne neé Manby (1856/7-1941) married Walter Raleigh Browne (1842-1884), civil engineer, in 1878. She worked for the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1880s and 1890s.
