Papers comprising:

  1. Item 1: 'Notes on a meeting held on 24th Feb 1910 at the camp known as Kiserian close to the kraal of Lenana'. Notes written by Arthur Collyer on the meeting attended by elders of the Maasai, including Lenana and Masikonde, and British officials to discuss the proposed move of the Maasai from the Rumuruti area to south of the Rift Valley.
  2. Item 2: Carbon copy of the typed transcription of Collyer's handwritten notes, 1910.
  3. Iten 3: Pencil notes by Collyer about the proposed move of the Maasai including records of walking safaris in June-August and in December 1910 to inspect the new area.
  4. Item 4: Chapter on Arthur Collyer from Veronica Bellers' book A Speck in the Ocean of Time (2014).

Abstract

Papers of Arthur Collyer relating to the move of the Maasai from the Rumuruti area to south of the Rift Valley in 1911.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur John Morice Collyer was born in Horsham, Sussex, in 1880 and educated at Lincoln College, Oxford. He joined the administration of the East African Protectorate in the early 1900s and was an Assistant Collector in 1902 and District Commissioner at Rumuruti in 1906. He died of tuberculosis on 19 October 1912 at Nyeri.
