Abstract

One hundred prints of 20th century British photographers donated by Claire and James Hyman.

Biographical / Historical

Shirley Baker (1932-2014) was an eminent post-war British photographer and one of the few women street photographers.

Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was an eminent photographer and designer who initially specialised in portrait photography before undertaking documentary work during World War II. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

John Blakemore (b. 1936), a leading photographer of landscape and nature.

Tom Blau (1912-1984), a Hungarian who came to London in 1935, founded Camera Press in 1947 and photographed eminent people.

Jane Bown (1925-2014) worked in all areas of photojournalism but was particularly known for portraiture. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Bill Brandt (1904-1983) learnt photography in Vienna and Paris. He moved to London in 1934 and specialised in documentary photography. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Mark Gerson (b. 1921), a professional photographer from 1947 specialising in portraits of literary figures.

Fay Godwin (1931-2005) established her own photographic business in the 1970s taking portraits and documentary photographs. She developed a specialism in landscape photography, publishing several books. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Paul Hill (b. 1941), initially a newspaper reporter and then photojournalist and lecturer in photography, founded The Photographers' Place residential photography workshop.

Kurt Hutton (1893-1960) was a photojournalist who worked for Picture Post and other publications after moving to England from Germany in 1933. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Colin Jones (b. 1936) has taken photographs for the Sunday Times Magazine, Life and National Geographic documenting subjects ranging from industrial communities and first generation immigrants to Communist Russia and the Royal Ballet.

Dafydd Jones (b. 1956) worked for Tatler magazine in the 1980s photographing balls, dances and weddings.

Gemma Levine (b. 1939) specialises in portraits of eminent British people.

Neil Libbert (b. 1938) worked for the Manchester Guardian, Sunday Times and Illustrated London News before becoming a freelance photographer in 1968.

Jo Spence (1934-1992) initially specialised in family portraits but moved to documentary and educational work and was a founder of the Photography Workshop.

Wolfgang Suschitzky (1912-2016) was a documentary photographer and cinematographer who moved to London from Austria in 1934.

Homer Sykes (b. 1949) has specialised in photographing local festivals and customs and the British landscape.
