Abstract

Papers of Emilie Savage-Smith, b. 1941, historian of science, relating to celestial globes.

Biographical / Historical

Dr Emilie Savage-Smith (b. 1941) is a historian of science specialising in Islamic celestial globes. She was professor of the History of Islamic Science in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford from 2006 to 2019. She was a fellow and archivist of St Cross College, Oxford, 2004-2021.

Savage-Smith graduated from DePauw University in 1962 and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. She has authored several books, including Islamicate Celestial Globes: Their History, Construction and Use, 1985. She was named a fellow of the British Academy, 2010, and the Medieval Academy of America, 2020.

Arrangement

Savage-Smith's original order has been retained as far as possible. The material is arranged in series according to globe type, with a series of general correspondence and papers.
