Abstract

Archive of C.F.C. Hawkes, archaeologist of European prehistory and chair of European Archaeology at Oxford.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Francis Christopher Hawkes (1905-1992) was an archaeologist specialising in European prehistory. He attended Winchester College (1918) and New College, Oxford. He worked at the British Museum in the Department of British and Medieval Antiquities from 1928 until 1946. He was appointed to the new chair of European Archaeology at Oxford in 1946 and held the position until his retirement in 1972. He was married to the archaeologist and writer Jacquetta Hopkins (1910-1996) from 1933 until 1953 and then to archaeologist Sonia Chadwick (1933-1999) from 1959 until his death.

Charles Pascoe Hawkes (1877-1956) was born to C.S. Hawkes and Frances Hawkes. He entered the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1900 and retired in 1920 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a barrister from 1902 until 1950. He was an author and political cartoonist and had interests in travel and amateur acting.
