Abstract
Papers relating to Scorpion, Oxford University satirical magazine.
Biographical / Historical
Scorpion was a satirical magazine founded at Oxford University in April 1969, a time of student protest and national mockery of long-established institutions. It was published fortnightly during term and sold by a network of college representatives and a small number of outlets.
The senior member (a requirement for all student societies and undertakings) was Dr John Roberts of Merton College and the first editor and co-founder was Martin Wainwright, later Northern Editor of the Guardian newspaper for 18 years. Contributors included the poet Christopher Reid and Rupert Besley who became a professional cartoonist.
The original editorial co-operative ran the magazine for a year before handing over to a group of younger students and Vilnis Vesma became the new editor, publishing four issues.
