Abstract
Papers of John Walter Matthew relating to Northern Nigeria.
Biographical / Historical
John Walter Matthew was born in Norfolk in 1923 and educated at Winchester College and Christ Church College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Navy from 1942 to 1946. Joining the Colonial Service he served in Northern Nigeria from 1948 until 1963, apart from a secondment to South Georgia in 1956-1959 for the International Geophysical Year. After retiring from Nigeria he was assistant bursar at Winchester College, 1965-1985, and died in 2003.
