Abstract
Letters from John Masefield to Grace Hunter
Biographical / Historical
John Edward Masefield (1878-1967) was a poet and novelist. He was the Poet Laureate, 1930-1967. For further details see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Arrangement
All but one of the letters are undated, although in some cases the envelopes are present and thus the postmarks (where legible) enable the letters to be placed in sequence. This, however, is only approximate, partly because so many envelopes are not extant and partly because in some cases several letters of apparently widely different dates were found in the same envelope. Sometimes a letter appears to be of a different date from the postmark on the envelope in which it was found. Letters (without envelopes) which can be approximately dates have been placed in what is thought to be their proper position. Undateable letters have been placed at the end of the letter sequence.
