Abstract

'Fox Talbot's Articles of Glass.' Nine photogravures by Cornelia Parker. Made in 2017, using the glassware of William Henry Fox Talbot.

Biographical / Historical

In the 1840s, WHF Talbot created a calotype photograph of crystal glassware carefully arranged on three shelves. These items were kept and donated to the Bodleian as part of the Talbot archive. The artist Cornelia Parker used these same glass objects to create a series of photogravures. She placed the objects on a sheet of sensitised copper and exposed it to ultraviolet light. The light refracted through the crystal and left a photographic impression, which Parker then etched and used to print onto on paper.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Created by Cornelia Parker in 2017, using objects from the Bodleian Talbot archive. Acquired from the artist as part of an agreement for her to use glassware from the Talbot archive.

Related Materials

The glassware used is held in the Talbot archive. See: MS. WHF Talbot objects 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, and 13.

A salt print of Talbot's own Articles of Glass photograph is held in MS. WHF Talbot photogr. 4.2 and is on the Talbot Catalogue Raisonee as Schaaf 69. The original calotype negative is in the National Science and Media Museum collection.
