Biographical / Historical
Sir Oswald Raynor Arthur (1905-1973) was educated at Charterhouse, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He entered the Colonial Service in Nigeria in 1928. In 1937 he was transferred to Cyprus where he held the posts of Administrative Officer (1937), Commissioner (1946), Chief Commissioner (1948) and Governor's Deputy (1950). During the 1950s, he served as Colonial Secretary in Bermuda (1951), Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Falkland Islands (1954), and Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahamas (1957). He retired from the Colonial Service in 1960. Sir Arthur was awarded the CMG (1953), CVO (1953), KCMG (1957) and in 1962 became a Justice of the Peace in East Sussex.
