The archive comprises fifteen Dageurreotype portraits by Beard, Claudet, Booth, Mayall, Paine, and others, a copy of The Art Union Journal, featuring a salt print by W.H.F. Talbot, various engravings from Dageurreotypes, cuttings from periodicals, and other ephemera relating to the early years of photography in Britian.

Abstract

Daguerreotypes and ephemera collected by Professor Geoffrey Batchen, relating to the early history of photography in Britian and with particular emphasis on the relationship between photography and printing.

Biographical / Historical

Geoffrey Batchen is Oxford Professor of Art History and a world-renowned photo-historian. He has published numerous books on photographic history and curated exhibitions all over the world.

Custodial History

The items in the collection were acquired by Geoffrey Batchen between 1980 and 2022. In 2023 they featured in a Bodleian exhibition about the early history of photography called A New Power: Photography in Britain 1800–1850. Following the exhibition they were offered to the Bodleian for the permanent collections.
