Abstract

Papers and correspondence of Howell Arthur Gwynne (1865-1950), Reuters correspondent and editor of the Morning Post 1911-1937.

Biographical / Historical

Howell Arthur Gwynne was born in Kilvey, Wales, 3 Sep 1865. During his early career he became a Reuter's correspondent and in 1895 was appointed Reuters Special Agency correspondent for the Second Ashanti Expedition. He also went to South Africa for the Reuter's war service during the Boer War from 1899. In 1904 he was appointed editor of the Standard and upon his resignation in 1911 he became editor of the Morning Post, 1911-1937. Gwynne resided in Little Easton, Essex. He died in Jun 1950. Arrangement

The papers were originally arranged into five series labelled A-E. This arrangement was mostly retained and is as follows:

  1. A - Diaries
  2. B - Subjects
  3. C - Major correspondence
  4. D - Miscellaneous correspondence
  5. E - Miscellaneous papers.

MS. Gwynne dep. 27/3, which contained material belonging to more than one series (A, diaries and E, miscellaneous papers) has been reboxed as MSS. Gwynne dep. 27/3/1-3.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

MSS. Dep. Gwynne 1-27 were deposited by Admiral Sir Ian Hogg in 1976. MSS. Gwynne dep. 28-36 were also deposited by Admiral Sir Ian Hogg in July 1981, via Jennifer Coles.
