Seven exercise books of John Philipson of Sparty Lea (Allendale, Northumberland), dated c.1862-1864, containing various scientific and mathematical examples in various styles of penmanship.

Five have printed title pages by T. Simpson & Sons of Newcastle (two of Boston, two of Harper's Ferry, Virginia, and one of St Louis). With marbled covers and edges.

Abstract

Seven exercise books of John Philipson, Sparty Lea (Northumberland), c.1862-1864.

Biographical / Historical

John Philipson of Sparty Lea (a hamlet in Allendale, Northumberland) described himself as 'aged 11 years' on 2 May 1862.

Philipson may have been tutored by Thomas Sopwith FRS (1803–1879), mining engineer, teacher of geology and local historian.
