Biographical / Historical

Robert Shackleton (1919-1986) was Bodley's Librarian, 1966-1979, Marshal Foch Professor of French Literature, and Fellow of All Souls College, 1979-1986. He collected books by and about Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, and wrote Montesquieu : a critical biography (London : Oxford University Press, 1970). Details are given in Who Was Who.

The collection was bequeathed to the Library by Robert Shackleton, with his library of books by and about Montesquieu, 1986.
