Biographical / Historical
John Innes Mackintosh Stewart (1906-1994) was a Scottish novelist and academic. He studied English Literature at Oriel College, Oxford, going on to undertake lectureships and professorships in English at the University of Leeds, the University of Adelaide, the Queen's University of Belfast and Oxford University. He published works of literary criticism and contemporary novels under his own name, using the pseudonym Michael Innes to publish a highly successful series of crime novels and short story collections. He died in Coulsdon, in south London, at the age of 88.
