Seven volumes of travel diaries and sketchbooks from travels by Thomas K. Hall and his wife Elizabeth Hall, on the European continent (France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium), Jun 1818-Jun 1819:

A travel journal in 2 volumes detailing the 1818-1819 tour by Mr T.K. Hall:

  1. (1) Notebook (marbled cover with green spine) with diary commencing 2 Jun 1818 (starting in London), including a list of places stayed and dates at the back. Mention of previous meeting with Lord Byron in section describing Rome (26 Dec 1818- 4 Jan 1819).
  2. (2) Notebook (plain green binding) with diary commencing 17 Oct 1818 (starting in Geneva), including a list of miles travelled between cities pasted in the front, and a paper tied in near front with list of accommodations taken at each city, and ratings for these.

A travel journal in 3 volumes detailing the 1818-1819 tour by Mrs Eliza Hall:

  1. (3) 'Mrs Halls Journal Vol I France' (Dover - Lausanne).
  2. (4) 'Mrs Halls Journal Vol. II Italy' (Lausanne - Naples), with paper insert at end detailing dates and activities in Rome.
  3. (5) 'Mrs Halls Journal Vol. III Germany' (Naples - London), with details at end of dates and cities visited throughout the journey.

Watercolours and engravings:

  1. (6) Watercolour book (marbled cover and red spine) with watercolour paintings and sketches from 1818 tour (some n.d.) [Presumably by Eliza Hall.] Engraving print pasted in first page. Geneaology 'Copied from family Bible' pasted in front, with details of Lorenzo Kirkpatrick O'Toole (later Hall) and Edward Kirkpatrick Hall - document post-1888.
  2. (7) Watercolour book (brown cover) with watercolour paintings and sketches from 1818 tour, and some from 1817(?), 1826, 1827 and 1829, some n.d. Note inside front cover says sketches are by Eliza Hall. Most watercolour paintings pasted in, with engraving prints pasted in at end.

Abstract

Diaries of continental tours of Thomas K. Hall and Elizabeth ('Eliza') Hall, with travel journals and sketches

Biographical / Historical

Mr Thomas Kirkpatrick (T.K.) Hall (b. 9 April 1776, d. 3 Jan 1865) of Holly Bush was Sheriff of Staffordshire for 1817. He is the author of two of these journals. His wife (married 1810) was Mrs Elizabeth ('Eliza') Hall née Crompton; she is the author of three of the volumes in the collection and at least one sketchbook.

Custodial History

Note in front cover of one notebook (green spine, marbled cover) records that the book was given to Edward Hall by his great uncle Tho.K. Hall.
