Autobiography and travel journal of Henry Alfred Napier, rector of Swyncombe, Oxfordshire
Manuscript autobiography, c.1817-1864, of Henry Alfred Napier, particularly describing his extensive travels in Europe in the 1830s and 1840s. It includes information about Napier's family, notes on places and buildings he visited with transcripts of memorial stones and gravestones, and some drawings. A number of letters are pasted in (c.1815-1870), there are two photographs of Napier (one pasted in and one loose) and a (loose) document on vellum recording his institution as rector of Swyncombe in 1826.
In reversed calf binding with lock lacking clasp.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Alfred Napier, antiquary and clergyman, was born in 1797, the son of Francis Napier, 8th Lord Napier of Merchistoun, an army officer, and Maria Margaret Clavering. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and in 1826 was appointed Rector of Swyncombe in Oxfordshire where he remained until his death in 1871. In 1858 he published Historical notices of the parishes of Swyncombe and Ewelme in the county of Oxford.

The manuscript was sold by Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers in February 2021.
