Biographical / Historical

Anthony Arthur Shillingford, CBE (1957), was born in 1903. He was educated at Dulwich College, and Worcester College, Oxford. His career with the Colonial Service in Nigeria began in 1926 when he was appointed to the post of education officer; he was promoted to senior education officer in 1938. Shillingford became chief inspector of education in 1952, director of education for the Northern Region in 1953, and chief federal advisor on education for the Federation of Nigeria in 1957. Compiled with reference to A Biographical Dictionary of the British Colonial Service 1939-1966 by A.H.M. Kirk-Greene (1991).
