Scrapbook belonging to the Ruxton family of Black Castle, Co. Meath or the Edgeworth family of Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford
Containing verses, sketches, botanical drawings and etchings cut from printed books, probably compiled by members of the Ruxton family of Black Castle, Co. Meath, or members of the Edgeworth family of Edgeworthstown. The volume, which was re-bound c.1980, includes:
- (fols. 1-17) charades and verses by Isa Forde, fol. 1 inscribed ‘Six Charades by Mrs Forde great Aunt to Mrs. [? Richard Fitzherbert]
- (fol. 94) an unpublished drawing, possibly by Charlotte Edgeworth, illustrating R.L. and M. Edgeworth, ‘The way to my grandmother’s’, A rational primer (London, 1799)
- (fols. 127, 185) drawings by Mrs. Frances Edgeworth, n.d.
- (fol. 148) a sketch inscribed by Maria Edgeworth, ‘…Maria E tracit et sratchit et blotchit’, 1835

Biographical / Historical
The Ruxton and Edgeworth families were united by the marriage in 1770 of John Ruxton of Black Castle, County Meath, Ireland and Margaret Edgeworth (1746-1830) who was the aunt of the novelist, Maria Edgeworth. They had five children. John Ruxton died in 1825.
